Christians always seem to have a problem with ditches along the narrow way. Antinomianism vs Legalism is an excellent doctrinal example. In today’s religious sphere, doctrines have bled over into our politics which has created a new “opportunity” of falling into ditches between Leftism & the New Christian Right1. Groups like Side B have been playing dirty on the Left2, and so many on the NCR have been happy to join them in the muck.
Our goal with this new series is to look at people on either side of the ditch and point out clear issues as to why the narrow road is a better way. We aim to address those who have seemingly fallen off the narrow road and have dragged others with them. We have clear instructions from the Bible to identify3, avoid4, and expose such false teachings and those who promote them5. For the benefit of the flock’s safety6, to accurse wicked teachers7, but ultimately to see them hopefully restored and corrected within the faith. We do all of this through clearly appealing to the Word of God and the standards which are found in it, doing all of it through the love of God and in a act to love our neighbor8.
Titus 3:9-11 NKJV – But avoid foolish disputes, genealogies, contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and useless. Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition, knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned.
What is a Biblically qualified Teacher
Many people in today’s Church have forgotten the importance of our Pastors and Teachers being called and qualified men, in the eyes of God first and foremost. So often we get caught up in how popular they are or how great a speaker they present themselves to be. Not to mention how we judge their success by the size of their church and/or online following. Affirming one’s calling is a lost discernment in today’s church with how easy it is to become a self-proclaimed “Pastor.” Additionally, it is easy for some who have been caught up in scandals to just fly under the radar until they start up a new church and return to deceiving again. Let’s dive into what it looks like to be qualified, for this will help us discern who is unqualified for the office.
‘The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.’ – 1 Timothy 3:1-7
above reproach – What is the purpose of being above reproach? It seems that it serves the purpose of keeping us from staining the teachings and character of Christ. This is because we are ambassadors to non-believers, as we are supposed to be a living witness of Christ in our daily lives to those who are lost. If we live a worldly example before them, it will harm the Gospel of Christ and our testimony to them as Christians. This comes at a much higher cost and accountability for those who are leaders for the body of the church, for they are held to a high standard being that they have been put in place over the flock of God.
the husband of one wife – This is one of the main scriptural texts against polygamy, as we see it is the standard for marriage and for one who desires said office of the Church. Not only this, but this would also lead to the disqualification of anyone who was actively committing adultery while in office and/or after having been born again (keep this in mind). This may also apply to someone who has been divorced, while also being a disqualifier towards all women in this area pursuing to be a Elder/Overseer.
sober-minded, self-controlled – Being that this is a highly respected office within the body of Christ, it makes sense that they would not want lunatic crazies in the office. Nor would they want someone who is so fiery that he cannot contain his own tongue. These are two important qualities of a pastor to keep, being that they both stem from the Word of God and the Fruit of the Spirit.
respectable, hospitable – Being able to welcome others well is a crucial quality in any Christian, not to mention teachers and elders. Even more important is being respectable towards others so that one might also receive mutual respect. This hospitality and respect are not meant for just the benefit of others but for God’s glory. Since kindness and goodness are fruits of the Spirit, it would be wise to assume our leaders and shepherds should be exhibiting these qualities.
able to teach – I know this one is a shocker to all, that we require our Teachers to be able to teach others. You would think this is an obvious one, but I think emphasis is placed on “able,” meaning are they able to teach sound doctrine, rather than just give a TED Talk. This is also a safeguard from someone having the office and yet not doing any work or advancing the kingdom. This keeps us away from false teachers and slothfulness in the overseer office.
not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. – Thankfully, Paul doesn’t just finish with only qualifications, but rather he ends with things that would disqualify an overseer as well. Such things he lists are worldly and opposed to the Spirit. You should not be finding your pastor drunk at the bar nor in private. You should not see your elders willfully getting into physical nor verbal violence with others. Your teachers should not be stirring up quarrelsome arguments with members of the body. Your Church leaders should not be looking to gain profit off of other believers, for we know the dangers that the love of money has on people. All of this is opposite to the calling we have in Christ to become a new creation and to live by the Spirit. None of these disqualifiers could be placed on Christ during His life, so let us imitate Him more and more each day.
All these things must be observed when we think about one’s calling to the office of overseer. Failure to meet these standards clearly means they are unqualified for the office, no matter whether these things are true of them prior to coming to the office (after having been reborn) or while they are in the office itself. God has called our leaders to a higher standard, and we are to hold them to this. This looks differently in each case depending upon the depth of the offense and the repentance of the guilty. In many cases we respect the choices of the Elders verdicts of each situation.
‘I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.’ – Romans 16:17-18
Mark Driscoll
Once upon a time, there was a young, restless, reformed9 man by the name of Mark Driscoll. Many people looked up to him for his masculine, macho teaching and for co-founding Acts 2910. Not to mention his highly successful church at the time, called Mars Hill, which he founded when he was around the age of 25. During the upsurge of Mars Hill, Mark Driscoll found himself in many controversial moments that, when compared in contrast with 1 Timothy, would reveal him as unfit for the office. These moments have been addressed sometimes by others pointing them out, other times by Driscoll himself making apologies, and eventually through church discipline by his Elders (of whom he technically fled and was never restored). Let’s dive further into some of the reasons why Mark is disqualified from the office that he once held.

- Many of the Elders and Church leaders at the time of Mark’s pastoral ministry took notice of what looked to have been a pattern of reoccurring sinful behavior in how he conducted himself with regard to others. In 2014, an internal investigation by Mars Hill elders concluded that Driscoll had demonstrated arrogance, domineering leadership, and harsh speech towards his staff and congregants of the church. Such leadership from Mark lead to many being fearful of him and his actions. This would be in direct contrast with our Elders/Overseers being called to be “not violent but gentle”11 “not arrogant or quick-tempered”12.
- Driscoll became known early in his ministry for his use of coarse language and explicit comments in his sermons and online communications. Mark very often used sexually charged language13 that made many feel uncomfortable around him. He was also known for his foul tongue, which led to cussing14 and physically violent speech15. Many who sat under him identified him as having anger management issues. These are not things to be found in our Pastors, for they are to be “respectable, self-controlled, and sober-minded“.
- Early on, about 5 years into his ministry, his church adopted an “unmoderated discussion” forum on their website. This raised two issues: one, that it was unmoderated, meaning there was no accountability; and secondly, that Mark created an anonymous account (William Wallace II)16 to stir up trouble secretly. This led him to anger and provoke others seemingly just for fun. This also gave Mark a place to complain and openly bash those who criticize his ministry while secretly praising his own self in front of others, all while using crude speech17. Yet this led him to failure in the areas of being “above reproach”18 and or “not quarrelsome or arrogant”19. If you will remember someone recently had this very same thing get exposed about them and they were removed from the pulpit along with their other ministry positions20.

- Last but not least, after all of this caught up to him in 2014, he underwent Church discipline, which is a great and healthy thing if the one under discipline submits to it and undergoes the full process. Yet that is not what Mark did21; the disciplinary process being conducted by elders was never completed22. Imagine not only running away from discipline but starting another church and switching theological camps just so he can start all over again23. This is a common thing among false and fallen teachers: just switch disguise and do it all over again.
There is much more to add to the list but as you can tell from the list above, Mark Driscoll has no right to still be preaching and occupying the office of Elder/Overseer. Even just one of those claims, if truthful, is enough to disqualify someone from exercising that office for life. Some might say that he was unfairly treated or that such claims were exaggerated. Some even say they never experienced the abusive treatment and that they benefited spiritually from his preaching. Nevertheless, the evidence is there, and when held up to the standards of Scripture, he falls short and is fully guilty of those actions that disqualify one’s ministry. We must not make excuses for such poor behavior, especially from one who is meant to be a shepherd of the flock.

Note that in many ways we are guilty of some of these very things. But this is another reason why not all men are called to the ministry office of Overseer. There is forgiveness to be found for repentant sinners who have fallen short of the standards of Scripture. But that does not neglect the office being reserved for those who are above such reproach. The standards are not perfection, but they are much higher than anything else a man will be called to.
Joel Webbon
None of these characters seem to be as dishonorable, disgraceful, and discreditable as Joel Webbon. “Pastor” Joel Webbon is the President and Founder of Right Response Ministries and the Senior Pastor of Covenant Bible Church, located on the North Side of Austin, Texas24. However, as we’ll uncover in this article, Joel is not qualified for these positions and, frankly, should be under church discipline just as Mark should still be. But before Joel came to Austin, he was a pastor in San Diego with Vineyard Blue Church around 2011. This came about with him and his friends starting a church plant for the Association of Vineyard Churches. Now note, he would have been around 23-25 years old at this time, roughly the same age as Mark Driscoll when Mars Hill started. It took a few years to get established after having arrived in California in 2009. He was also later serving under Acts 29, the very same structure that Driscoll had co-founded, prior to his departure from California. Since then, Joel has been riding a controversial roller coaster, ever since in and out of the spotlight, falling in multiple ways. Let’s get started with his time in California before we move to today’s events.
- On March 21st, 2025, news broke on the app formerly known as Twitter that Joel had been involved in extramarital fornication while acting as a pastor25. Joel responded to this claim, and to his credit, confirmed the sinful behavior. However, his response provided an interesting recollection of events. He denied his role as pastor and even his role as church planter, stating that at the time of this fornication he was neither. Notice how Joel downplays his credentials at the time, referring to his church plant as a “glorified Bible study on Sunday evenings” and how he was never ordained by Vineyard. Yet, provided below are some screenshots that seem to say the opposite. It seems either very fishy stuff is going on or just a huge web of more lies. Fornication prior to marriage as a Christian (meaning this took place after having been born again) would be a disqualification as it would be a violation of being “above reproach” and “the husband of one wife.” Let alone having this fornication take place with a church member while operating in the office of Overseer is a grave sin. Just recently, over the last few years, we had a pastor admit to a form of this very same sin and he was removed from office permanently26, as he should be because these are the standards God gives His people for those who desire to shepherd His flock.

- To continue this troubling track record that Joel has with women, let us look at some of his more recent examples of misogyny toward women online and in general. We have several statements such as: “They should really lose 20 to 30 pounds when looking for a guy,”27 or “Women today are dumb, wicked, vile whores…. Women are atrocious today.”28 That’s not exactly how the godly woman are described in Proverbs29. He has also said, “No, they shouldn’t be speaking. Period. The public sphere is not the realm of women.”30 Yet he seems perfectly fine with his wife writing books in the public sphere and speaking on social media. Other remarks include statements like, “If you can’t take the heat, get back in the kitchen,”31 or perhaps his most famous post about how women should not be lecturing him but rather baking pies32. Imagine your pastor speaking to another person online by saying, “You are one of the retarded women I spoke of.”33 and then crying about people being upset with him over saying the “average woman on social media is retarded”34. In no way could I ever see my pastor speaking in such a way, let alone Jesus approving of such vile and demeaning language towards women35. Statements and actions such as these would clearly be a failure to be “self-controlled”, “respectable”, “gentle”, and “not quarrelsome”36 as a overseer of God’s people.

- One of Joel’s most well-known takes about himself is his disdain towards Jews recently on full display with his downplaying of Jesus Jewish roots37 (which is a serious error), he is also well known for being in favor of more Kinism type views38. Many of his most recent takes display this form of hatred and preference of favoritism towards his own kind, such as statements like “all Black people are impulsive and lazy and that all Jewish people are subversive.”39– When faced with a choice between going to a Black doctor or a White doctor, Webbon said he would choose the White doctor because “if there’s a chance that one of them was not qualified, and was given a free pass, it’d be the Black guy.”40 He also has stated that he would discourage his daughter from marrying a moral, godly, upstanding Christian Black man because “I would prefer for my grandchildren to look like me.”41 Not to mention his more recent takes of being “AGAINST interracial marriage” completely, which has clearly set him against “his own” reformed confession regarding faith-based marriages.42 Joel has also stated “polygamy is not condemned in Scripture”43 despite it being condemned in all our confessions (which articulate Scripture’s basic tenets). It implicitly condemned in scripture by the re-affirming the original, monogamous intent of marriage. During a November 20, 2024 livestream, Joel Webbon argued that pastors who deny racial IQ disparities are unfit for ministry. He claimed, “Any Christian minister who denies [these disparities]…is a liar…you’re disqualified from ministry for lying.”44 It’s ironic that he has issues with ministers “lying” about race issues but he is fine with his entire ministry sitting upon a throne of lies. Without a doubt, Webbon is lacking when it comes to being “hospitable,”45 “not quarrelsome,” and being “respectable” toward other people made in the image of God, including his own brothers and sisters in Christ. It is a telling sign when your “pastor” is known more for his political and racial commits then he is for the Gospel of our Lord.

- Imagine being the guy who wakes up one day and wants to challenge other men by taunting them to post their Testosterone-levels like they are some meatheads back in college46. Now imagine that very same guy doing it as a “pastor” and engaging in online mockery of another theologian/teacher in the ministry. Let’s not forget when Joel was faced with the question of how his debate went; he just said, “9 out of 10 people who thought he lost the debate had a low IQ of 90-100. But people with an IQ over 130 thought he won.”47 How convenient it must be to write off everyone who disagrees with you as having a low IQ and low T-levels, as if that proves you to be this big mighty man who is always correct. To me, it seems to appear as someone having little boy syndrome, someone who is just prideful in all that he does. He might even say something along the lines that he is the “best that we have to offer”48. Such a statement seems to be the opposite of what we see Paul admit to in 1 Corinthians and 1 Timothy49. I am reminded of arguments online over his growing antisemitism and his response being “This is why the young men will come to me, and no one will remember your name.” because that is all Joel wants, is to make much of his own name even at the expense of others. Joel has had an ongoing record of boastfulness and pride ever since the early days in ministry, and sadly he still hasn’t grown out of it. Pride destroys, especially those who are in the position of Overseer; this is why one of the qualifications listed in Titus is “He must not be arrogant.” Many, including Joel, have fallen short of this.

- Running from Church Discipline seems to be a common factor among false teachers once they have been called out of the darkness50. Webbon claims his former elders affirmed his repentance and did not remove him from ministry. However, a testimony released by elders and deacons of his former church disputes this account and alleges that he later rejected their discipline and misrepresented the events. “More than a decade has passed since this sin occurred, but we were recently made aware that it was not properly and completely confessed.” – this is what his elders and former co-workers in the Spirit had to say about his past. They also stated that what little repentance he did eventually show was not genuine and that serious concerns remain regarding his fitness for ministry. WHY CAN’T OTHERS SUBMIT to the decisions of those who were once placed over him by God.
“In early June of 2020, after weeks of prayer and discussion, all four of Joel Webbon’s Elders unanimously called him to repent for five separate and specific sins. This call to repentance occurred by the reading of a letter at the Elders table, signed by all four of Joel’s Elders. Three sins explicitly related to Joel’s pastoral qualifications in Titus 1 and 1 Timothy 3 included yearslong repeated patterns of (1) quarrelsomeness, (2) lack of self-control, and (3) failure to be above reproach. Additionally, the Elders called Pastor Joel to repent for the sins of boastfulness and passive aggression, which while not listed in Titus 1 and 1 Timothy 3 are two sins that an Elder must be “above reproach” in.” – elders letter
All the SDRC leadership who didn’t have a familial relationship to Webbon remained at the church and signed the 2023 letter. which stated “[T]he vast majority of witnesses among Joel’s co-officers during the relevant time periods, and his closest friends, all agree that Pastor Joel has a false revisionist history of the actual events, rooted largely in his patterns of sinful emotionalism and lack of self-control, which have continually fogged his discernment over the years and, lead to the call of repentance in the first place. The sins of boastfulness and hungering for personal glory have only observably grown in his public ministry, which further necessitates this Testimony:, Joel Webbon; has, since leaving, explicitly told us that our assessment of him was wrong, and that he is right to reject our discipline.”
Just like Mark, there is much more to add, but as you can tell from the list above, Joel Webbon has no right to still be preaching and occupying the office of Elder/Overseer. As you have seen, Joel has built a ministry that is simply known for its racial, women-hating, political, Gospel-less, quarrelsome nature. It has been built upon nothing more than anger and hate alone, which fully shows his immaturity51. People like these two tend to grow and feed off of controversy, and the more they end up in the spotlight, the happier it makes them. They are the clearest definition of the phrase “no such thing as bad publicity,” yet they are the farthest thing from being truly qualified ministers of God.
The Fruit of Acts 29 (Side Note)
Acts 29 was not just a church plant that later went bad; it cultivated a model of ministry that promoted a worldly view of strength and tried to stuff a circular block into a square hole. “A corrupt tree cannot bring forth good fruit.”52 This should not come as a surprise; it is evidence. Both Mark and Joel exhibit this authoritarian fixation on power, fleshly identity, and success measured by the world’s standards. Yet they also adhere to some core biblical standards: the Trinity, penal substitution, the deity of Christ, God’s sovereignty in salvation, etc. So it can be hard to hear the little twists and confusions they create between their teaching and living out of their ministry.
Orthodox doctrine is not sufficient to absolve false teaching when a man’s ministry excuses sin, refuses discipline, promotes lawlessness, or boasts in the color of one’s skin. Matthew 23:2-3 speaks of ministries teaching correct doctrine and Matthew 23:27-28 discusses fornication and filthy mouths. None of these are doctrinal technicalities; He grounds them in ministry practices. Denying someone the ability to marry another based on their skin tone is referenced in 1 Tim 4:1-3: “devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared”… “who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods.” Where do these teachings come from? Did you catch that? I highlighted the words for those in the back. Also, the last part “that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.“ Simply put, I do not believe they know or believe the truth that God created.
Jude 4 touches on using grace as a justification to be indifferent to holiness and unrighteousness. Jude identifies false teachers as those who promote grace in a way that excuses unrighteousness and rejects holiness, not merely those who deny formal Christological doctrines. A man can affirm Christ with his mouth while functionally denying Him via his lawless teaching. Teaching authoritarianism for the home, showing the fruit of a brute with a filthy mouth while telling those to be meek. Living in sin while in ministry. Or being bitter, angry, and vindictive, saying “Christians are gay and retarded,”53 berating the elders you serve with at meetings. Having impure conversations on social media with a woman who is not your wife, the list just keeps on going with these guys.
Acts 29 stated this “It is our conviction that the nature of the accusations against Mark, most of which have been confirmed by him, make it untenable and unhelpful to keep Mark… in our network,” the Act 29 board wrote in a letter. “In taking this action, our prayer is that it will encourage the leadership of Mars Hill to respond in a distinctive and godly manner so that the name of Christ will not continue to be dishonored.” Mark was removed from the ministry of Acts 29, due to a documented “pattern of ungodly and disqualifying behavior.”54
The head assessor of Acts 29, confirmed that Joel would not have been welcomed into the Acts 29 network had he fully disclosed the sin of fornication with a congregant occurring so recently. Therefore, Joel deceived current and future members and officers at The Response Church by failing to accurately confess relevant and disqualifying past sins to Acts 29 assessors. Joel was not above reproach in confessing this sin and has never stepped down from ministry due to fornicating with one of his own congregants.
Nothing more than lies and ungodly behavior from Mark and Joel.

Conclusion
‘And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.’ – 2 Timothy 2:24-26
The language from Webbon and Driscoll almost mimics a soul troubled by its own shortcomings, deflecting blame onto others. That posture is not one of repentance, meekness, or humility. It comes from a prideful heart—a leveling instinct that seeks to drag everyone down to the same standard rather than raise them up to righteousness. And this is seen in such statements as “Christians are gay and retarded,” or “my ministry is to insult evangelicals”55. Shepherds, however, are held to a higher standard and a purer calling. Christ Himself calls out false teachers as “whitewashed tombs”56 and so should we. Yet these men seem content to display their own putrid, vomit-stained garments while imagining they sound like the prophet Isaiah.
How many will die in their trespasses and sins because bullies like them use the name of Christ while employing methods God condemns in His Word? These tactics often create useful idiots for worldly thinking, much like the methods used by communist movements that manipulate people into the death trap of idolizing the state. In a similar way, it appears that Webbon and Driscoll seek to draw people into idolizing their own godless hermeneutic and prideful selves.
I believe we have connected the childish words of these two men and their abuse of positions enough. We have laid out multiple disqualifying actions of both Driscoll and Webbon within this article through a clear presentation of Scripture; now is the time to act upon such evidence in a way that both calls out the wickedness of false teachers and avoids their snares. Now let us not see the world through the beer goggles of worldly thinking. But let us instead go forth seeing it through the clear and often uncomfortable teachings of the Word of God, that we might be found walking in step with the Spirit, abounding in grace and love for both God and neighbor.
“Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.” – James 3:1
When we run across the likes of people like Joel and Mark we must ask ourselves the following questions.
Are they intentionally stirring up divisions among believers?
Do they build up and encourage the Church or simply to tear it and others down to benefit themselves?
Do they spend more time preaching the gospel, then they do political and racial issues?
How would their moral character stand against the standards of what a qualified Overseer is meant to be?
How often does the Pastor/Elder have to clear up/rephrase and address things he has formally said?
What type of accountability have they had in the past and did they honor it faithfully?
What would a non-Christian think of them? (in a general, non hostile way?)
What are they most known for in their ministry?
Do they act in accordance with the fruit of the Spirit?
Do they exhibit Christlikeness?
